Weblog 8

Local to me means a place where one feels at home and a place where one feels a sense of belonging.  Having place-based curriculum would be ideal I think because it would not only show the students that they do belong to a community, but it would make them feel involved in their community as well.  Having place-based education will also get the students more interested in their community and learning in general.  The students can learn about their community while also learning the basic skills such as reading and writing.  The ideal local place to teach for me would be in Cleveland Ohio because it is my "local" place and it is also ideal for learning because of all the different activities Cleveland presents its students with.  Cleveland also presents a diverse group of people which would also be ideal because that is how the world is.  When students learn and experience diversity they will be tolerant of people different from themselves and I believe that is important and can be learned through placed-based education.

For my Webquest project I will be working with one of my best friends Katie Kiliany.  We have decided  that our local place will be Cleveland Ohio since I have lived here my whole life and Katie goes to school near Cleveland.  More specifically however we will be doing our project on how the Great Lakes effect the amount of snow Cleveland receives.  We picked this topic because there are many different angles we can approach this topic and we look forward to brainstorming and developing our project.

Web Log 4 Ammendment

There are two changes in the Web Log 2.0 applications.

1. The first application I changed was the gradebook. I had at first SchoolCircuit but then I replaced it with LearnBoost. I found that Learnboost was more user friendly and I thought posting the grades on it was easier as well. LearnBoost is still helpful in communicating with the students what their grades are and how they can improve in the classroom.

2. The other application I changed was the online blog. I switched from Zanga to LiveJournal. I switched for the same reason I switched my gradebooks, LiveJournal was more user friendly I thought. With LiveJournal all the students can still look at each others journal entries and compare what they have posted.

Weblog 4

1. The first Web 2.0 application I picked was Dingbee. It is a calendar where Dr. Barnes can post events such as weekly web quizzes, paper, and tests. I picked this web application because it is user friendly and her students will be able to see the events easily. A calendar is a good communication tool for a classroom which will help the students study for tests and be able to know when papers are due.

2. Another Web 2.0 application is MyDataNest! It is an online storage application. Dr. Barnes can post the required readings on the application. It helps the teacher teach because it has all the readings in one spot. The students learn by reading the readings and it helps with communication because the students know all of the readings are in one place.

3. I also used SchoolCircuit for Dr. Barnes online gradebook. She can post the grades and the students can look to see what their grades. This is helpful to the students because they can see their updated grades whenever they want. This helps the teacher because the students will not be consistantly bothering her about what their grades. This is also good for communication as well.

4. The discussion board I choose was Micomobs. Dr. Barnes students can discuss any topic they want as long as they are a member. This will help Dr. barnes because she can see what the students are discussing and it will help see what her students are confused about. The students will benfit from this because they can ask their fellow peers questions about what is going on in class.

5. The last application I picked was Xanga. Dr. Barnes wants all of her students to have an account on Xanga so they can post their Journal Entries. This is helpful to other students because if they do not know what to put they can compare their responses to other students. Dr. Barnes can view what her students post on the blog so she can grade it.

Weblog 3

I had an interview with my Sociology professor Dr. Barnes.

She said she would like an announcement section to let her class know when speakers are coming and when certain homework is due. She would also put her staff information on the front page of her website. A calendar is essential she said to know when the tests and quizes are so she wants that on her website as well.

Dr. Barnes would like tabs to help organize her classes. Each tab would be for a different class. Then there would be tabs within the class tabs. Those tabs would consist of course information (with a syllabus), required readings and articles, weekly web quizzes, journal entries, a discussion board, and external links.

All of these applications would be helpful for her students she says. She is also allowing me to design the website however I would like :) So that pretty much means it's going to be colorful and have a sweet font. I am looking forward to exploring the Web 2.0 website more to find applications that Dr. Barnes wants as well.

Weblog 2

The Web 2.0 applications that I think would best facilitate my learning on a professor's website would be a storage application. The professor can put all of their readings and worksheets in that application. The students could then print them off before class as the teacher instructs them to do so. Another thing the professor could put in the storage application would be the class notes and/or Power Points. This would be helpful if a student was absent or if other students lost their notes. Another Web 2.0 application that would be helpful would be a calendar. This application would keep all the students on track with what the assignments are and when they are due.

My goals for this class are to learn how to better incorporate technology into the classroom. Including technology into the classroom can make learning more fun and interesting for students. With technology my classroom can run more efficiently and grab my student's attention. Another goal of mine is to better comprehend what a Web 2.0 application is and how to incorporate them into my website.

My learning and studying needs are to know what the assignment is and what the criteria for the assignment is. In order for me to do well on a assignment I must feel comfortable asking questions as well. I also need to know far in advance when an assignment is due.

The best way to communicate between students and professors is either email or Blackboard. Email is probably best though because Blackboard does not always work. Most people have email and check it frequently and it is a fast, easy way to communcate with anyone. A professor can also send attachments in an email which is good if there is something important to read or print out.
